Global Journalist
Last semester Schmittdiel worked as a producer and reporter for Global Journalist. Global Journalist began as a print magazine published by the International Press Institute, a Vienna-based nonprofit founded during the Cold War to advance press freedom. An IPI member brought the magazine to the Missouri School of Journalism where it is currently a multi-media based show that airs on KBIA, the local NPR-affiliate of mid-Missouri.

The first story Schmittdiel produced for Global Journalist was over the situation facing press freedom in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong is a case study in the fragility of press freedom: In this episode, Global Journalist investigates how a new National Security Law and a accreditation system for reporters are affecting journalism in a city that has long prided itself as a bastion of free speech.

"Global Journalist: From lone wolves to cross-border collaborators"

Once cut-throat competitors, journalists are now more frequently working together — often across borders — to investigate social problems that authorities either can't or won't tackle. All too often, these stories involve the murders of reporters. Global Journalist talked to founders of several ambitious collaborative journalism efforts about what got them started and how they keep going.
